Course Description
CMSE 802 is a graduate course in research software engineering taught through the lens of computational modeling. The course is designed for students who are building software as part of real research work and need a workflow that is practical, rigorous, and sustainable.
Students will develop and evaluate models using an Analytical/Physical/Data-Driven component convention, with emphasis on how many projects mix these elements in practice. This convention is used to guide course thinking and discussion, not to force every project into a rigid model. Throughout the semester, course activities and project milestones emphasize the shared software quality standards of this course:
- Safe
- Portable
- Reproducible
- Robust
- Literate
The main objective is not to complete disconnected assignments. The objective is to make measurable progress on research-relevant software that another teammate could run, understand, and extend.
