MSU VIP
The VIP Model
The Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) Program is a nonprofit alliance of colleges and universities that engages students in long-term, faculty-led academic work. Unlike traditional courses, VIP emphasizes sustained involvement, allowing students to contribute to projects that grow and evolve over time.
The VIP Consortium
VIP includes 50+ universities across 13 countries, each adapting the model to fit its institutional culture. Students from all academic backgrounds—from STEM to the humanities—are encouraged to participate. Learn more at the Vertically Integrated Projects Consortium.
VIP at MSU
The VIP program at Michigan State University launched in Spring 2026 through the efforts of Dirk Colbry, Jeff Siarto, and Brian Keas. The program connects undergraduate students with interdisciplinary, faculty-led teams.
What to Expect in VIP
VIP is designed as a multi-semester experience. Students enroll one semester at a time (typically earning about one credit per semester), but the greatest benefits come from continued participation across multiple semesters.
Over time, students can:
- Build deeper expertise in an academic area
- Contribute to meaningful, long-term projects
- Develop strong relationships with faculty, graduate mentors, and peers
- Take on increasing responsibility within their team
Students are encouraged—but not required—to stay with a team across semesters, allowing flexibility while still supporting long-term growth.
Learning Through Teams
VIP teams are structured to support collaborative learning across experience levels. Newer students work alongside returning members, creating an environment where students learn from one another while contributing to shared goals.
As students gain experience, many choose to take on roles that support their team’s progress—such as organizing work, mentoring new members, or helping guide project direction. These opportunities are flexible and often evolve over time, allowing students to build skills in teamwork, communication, and leadership.
Who Should Join?
VIP is open to students from all majors and levels of experience. Prior experience is not required.
We value:
- Curiosity and a willingness to learn
- Creative and critical thinking
- Openness to collaboration and feedback
- Respect for diverse perspectives and backgrounds
Students who are willing to engage, ask questions, and contribute to a team will find a meaningful place in VIP.
Why Participate?
VIP provides a unique opportunity to:
- Gain hands-on experience
- Work on real-world problems with interdisciplinary teams
