For this assignment I would like you to find two (2) articles about data science in the news. If you are NOT in the data science program then I encourage you to find a data science article in your field.

1. The first article should be how data solved a problem in your area of interest.
2. The second article should be how data (or the miss-handling of data) caused a problem.

For each article write up a short paragraph describing why you picked the article and it’s positive/negative impact. Please email these articles to your instructor (colbrydi@msu.edu) with the title “Data Science in the news”.

Article about how machine learning is helping reduce food waste. I am really interested in environment justice issues and I like this article because it shows how data science can be used to reduce waist and thus make our food production more efficient.

This article describes how bias is inherent in machine learning can have the same biases as humans. This article discusses a lot of bout social justice issues and the types of problems that can be caused by algorithm bias if we (data scientists) don’t pay attention to our models and take bias into consideration.
